Philosophy


We believe that the business of “Sports Marketing” in Japan today is mainly concerned with the sales of sponsorship and television rights and lacks the essential perspective of providing solutions for its clients. At SMJ, we provide sports teams and organizations the knowledge and ability to focus and energize their marketing programs. We also consult with businesses to create the best strategies for incorporating sports into their marketing tactics to maximize their growth opportunities.
 
We have re-assessed the fundamental value of sports, and believe the most important aspect of sports marketing is expressing the energy and excitement of the fans themselves (our consumers) in our clients' marketing plans. Leadership


Kenneth K. Berger

Managing Director. SMJ

 
Kenneth K. Berger, built his career in International Management Group (IMG), managing the licensing division in South East Asia, then Japan, where he developed and worked on many licensing programs, including the Major League Baseball (MLB), Wimbledon, Arnold Palmer and the British Open.
 
Later Mr. Berger was appointed as Managing Director, ISL Marketing Japan and later FIFA Marketing, where he headed the FIFA World Cup marketing and event services operations. After successfully delivering the marketing rights of FIFA World Cup, he launched out on his own with Sports Marketing Japan, Co. Ltd. (SMJ).
 
Mr. Berger has made his home in Asia over the last 19 years and holds degrees in International Business and Finance from the University of Colorado, Boulder, as well as an MBA from Thunderbird, The American Graduate School of International Management, (1989).
 
SMJ provides a range of services across licensing, marketing solutions, media content sales, brand consultation, and client representation activities. Clients include world-class organizations, such as International Baseball Federation (IBAF), World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (WWE), NBA, NFL, WimbledonAustralian Open, US LPGA, PGA TOURElectoronic Arts, Italian Serie A Football Clubs and ESPN.
